Peak Bodies

Under its constitution, the Federation has eight members, each of which is the major historical society or organisation in an Australian state or territory, and most of which in turn have affiliated historical societies within their state. In all, there are about 1,000 historical societies in Australia under the umbrella of the Federation.

In order to represent fully all historical and heritage societies and museums, applications for Associate Membership of the FAHS are invited from societies having objects of a similar or identical effect as those of the FAHS, whether in whole or part, and which are not formally affiliated with one of our member societies.

Canberra and District Historical Society

The Society is dedicated to : encouraging the study of the history of Canberra and district, and of Australia in relation to it promoting the compilation of authentic historical records preserving historical material and places of historic and aesthetic interests, and to fostering the interchange of information through talks, discussions, excursions and exhibitions.

Royal Australian Historical Society

The Royal Australian Historical Society (RAHS), Australia’s oldest historical organisation founded in Sydney in 1901, promotes the study of Australian history. The Society organises events, produces publications and provides research advice and support to its membership network of individuals and local historical societies, with a particular focus on New South Wales local and community history. Based at History House, 133 Macquarie Street, Sydney, our library contains a valuable research collection of more than 60,000 items on Australian history.

History Trust of South Australia

The History Trust operates three museums – the Migration Museum, National Motor Museum and South Australian Maritime Museum.

HTSA manages a Community Museums Program and offers annual grants for research and writing to promote the value of history and our place in the world.

Royal Historical Society of Victoria

Royal Historical Society of Victoria : Promoting and preserving the history of Victoria

The RHSV’s mission is to promote among our members, member societies, and the wider public, an interest in and understanding of Australian history, with a focus on the Victorian experience. The RHSV is the peak body for local and specialist historical societies throughout Victoria and is the historical society for central Melbourne.

Royal Western Australian Historical Society

The Royal Western Australian Historical Society (Inc) (RWAHS) was formed in 1926. In 90 years it has grown from a small group of people to about 800 members and organisations, including a network of 74 Affiliated Societies interested in preserving the history of Western Australia and to one with a royal charter. It houses a fascinating Museum with a unique art collection, an extensive reference Library, Photograph Archive and a boutique bookshop of Western Australian history publications. The Society has always been actively involved in advocacy for history and heritage across the State and over the last decade or so its influence in that regard has grown.

Tasmanian Historical Research Association

The Tasmanian Historical Research Association Inc. (THRA) was founded in 1951 to promote research into and publication of Tasmanian history, and to assist people working in this field. It is a non-profit incorporated Association managed by a committee of volunteers with Rules of the Association.

Royal Historical Society of Queensland

Founded in 1913, The Royal Historical Society of Queensland is a vibrant organisation dedicated to promoting Queensland’s history for the benefit of our members, affiliated societies and the broader community. As Queensland’s peak history body, the Society presents an active program of events, publishes the quarterly award winning Queensland History Journal, maintains an extensive library and museum collections, provides research services and hosts diverse exhibitions in the convict-built Commissariat Store Museum, the oldest occupied building in Queensland.

Historical Society of the Northern Territory

The Society encourages the study of, and research into, the history of the Northern Territory of Australia. It encourages the preservation and/or display of historical relics, records and other relevant materials to secure the preservation of places and objects of historical interest by local or Commonwealth authorities, or in any other way considered appropriate; the printing, publication and circulation of books, journals and such other documents as may assist any of the objects of the Society.
